Shel Silverstein

I'm a big fan of Shel Silverstein. I always have been. I was thinking about his poem called The Voice:

There is a voice inside of you
That whispers all day long,
"I feel this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong."
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
Or wise man can decide
What's right for you--just listen to
The voice that speaks inside.

I have just always loved this poem so much. I think it just reminds me that we need to listen to the voice of the Holy Ghost as well as the voice that's inside of us, giving us direction in our life. Our personal conscious and the Holy Ghost are probably one and the same, but I just remember reading this as a kid and feeling that no one can tell me what's right for my life. It has to come from me and inside of me. My own "voice" develops as I learn to understand myself better and my relationship with Heavenly Father. I fell like Shel knew and understood that.

  1. I love this! Shel Silverstein is also one of my favorite poets. I have learned recently just how important it is to listen to the Holy Ghost instead of people around you. Even though most people have your best interest at heart, Heavenly Father knows what is best for us. He can see the bigger picture. Thanks for sharing!
