Beatles' Love
My love for the Beatles began a long time ago. I was
probably 12 or 13 and I remember visiting my Grandpa in Idaho. My Grandma
passed away when my dad was a teenager so I never met her, but I loved hearing
the stories that my Grandpa would tell. Grandpa would always have a Beatles
song playing in the background, or he’d request we sing one of the songs to
him. When he passed away, we played The Long and Winding Road at his funeral. I
feel like that song symbolized his journey back to his wife again and his
reunion with her.
My favorite song from the Beatles is Yesterday.
“Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they’re here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.”
I think the reason this song means so much to me is because
I feel like my life was so much simpler and it has grown so complicated and
dramatic. I long for that easier time when I got to spend time with my Grandpa.
The Beatles represent the relationship I had with my Grandpa.
They represent an easier time when life was a little more laid back and music
was free loving and easily given. Since then, that relationship has translated
to my Dad. The Beatles connect my Dad and me. We have something in common and
that’s our love for the Beatles. We even danced to Here comes the Sun at my wedding
and it was absolutely perfect.
It always confuses me when people hate on the Beatles. They are the foundation of so much of what music is today. You can tell a bands greatness when they are just as relevant today as they were in the 60's.
