Box Elder Bugs

We moved to Provo from Springville after six months of being married. In Springville, we lived in the basement of a single lady who had two Yorkies. The story of our time in Springville could be a whole entire blog in and of itself, so I’ll save the dramatics on that one. We moved into this tiny, dinky, old apartment in the “ghetto” of Provo and… we fell in love with it. Except for one thing.
Box Elder Bugs.
Now, I don’t know if you know what a box elder bug is, but you should look it up. Odds are you probably have seen them before as they are native to Utah. They’re completely harmless black and red little devils of bugs. They were everywhere in our apartment.

At first, they were manageable. A little bug here and there never hurt anybody. However, a few weeks turned into a few months and by this point, I was going insane. I hated finding them everywhere I lived; on the window, the couch, above the sink, below the sink, in the bathroom while going the bathroom, and even in our bedroom. What did I do? I killed them: One after another, I killed them. I would go a little too crazy on the bug spray to the point that I ran out of that pretty quickly and moved onto Windex and 409. I was a little obsessed.

Luckily, it’s getting colder and I haven’t seen the bugs in weeks (Knock on wood). Next spring, I will be ready for them.

  1. I looked them up and am so grateful you brought this to my attention. I get asked quite frequently what those bugs are and have never been able to give a good answer. Try spraying all the floor boards and windows with raid every month or so starting in the spring. Got rid of me and my wife's ant, earwig, and spider problem.

  2. Love you writing! Very entertaining! I can definitely relate to the box elder bug thing, my cabin gets thousands of them every year!

  3. Box elder bugs are a stable at my house in South Jordan. I remember a red brick wall we had was always swarming with them. Luckily they don't really do anything besides gross you out.

  4. Those poor bugs... it’s sad to see you go on your murderous rampages.
